Pharmacists were active in supporting community involvement and participated in health and safety fairs, including the Fitness Challenge and the annual Avon Hospital and Richard E. Pharmacists worked closely with hospitalists and advanced practice provider teams to optimize patient care, as well as incorporating pharmacy students and residents into daily workflow.

Pharmacists participated on several hospital committees, including Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Patient Safety, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Critical Care Operations. Pharmacists provided decentralized services, including medication reconciliation, dosing consults and patient education, and worked as part of the interdisciplinary team. A total of 12,475 surgical cases occurred at Avon, which exceeded projected volumes by 12.8 percent. Avon’s Emergency Department has seen 40,575 patients, which exceeded projected patient volumes by 2.6 percent.

STRATEGIC CHANGE IN 2018 In the second full year of operations, Avon Hospital admitted 6,465 patients, an increase of 8.5 percent from 2017, and exceeded projected patient volumes by 1.1 percent. Technology at Avon Hospital, including Vocera, Badge- In-Badge-Out and interactive patient television, enhances communication among caregivers and efficiencies to deliver comprehensive patient care. Pharmacists are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and assist with medication reconciliation, discharge planning and patient education. Pharmacists have an opportunity to provide decentralized clinical patient-centered functions, as well as distributive functions.

The department employs the newest pharmacy technology, including a pharmacy carousel, Pyxis ES and IV room workflow software. Pharmacy specialists are integrated into the Critical Care and Infectious Disease patient care teams. The Pharmacy Department consists of 25 caregivers, including 11 pharmacists, one resident, 10 technicians and three administrative staff members.
